The Alliance chairman, Gudjon Sigurdsson, an ALS patient from Iceland, presided with the assistance of his daughter, Arnny. The meeting was hosted by the MND Association of Australia.

In December 2018, she was elected as Chairwoman of the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations. Ms. Balas holds a Master of Business Administration from Herriot-Watt University, a Master of Science in Human Movement Science Education from the University of Memphis, and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Truman State University.

Calaneet Balas (ALS Association, USA), Chairman of the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations, opened the week of meetings on December 1, 2019, with the 27th Annual Alliance Meeting. The Alliance brings together ALS/MND organizations from around the globe, and ALS Hope Foundation has been a member of this international group since 2001. Motor neuron disease is a clinically heterogeneous disease with significant differences in survival. The authors have characterised a subset of long term survivors seen in a tertiary clinic over a 12 year period in terms of clinical variables and demographics, comparing them with short term survivors and the remaining population. Thirty of 769 patients survived more than 10 years
